Stiff hips, tight back? What a stretching and mobility coach can do for you

A stretching and mobility coach helps you get back range of movement you have lost to desk days, long drives, old injuries or training without recovery. Sessions combine guided stretching, which lengthens tight muscles, with active mobility drills, which teach you to control that new range so you can actually use it. Most people feel looser after the first session; lasting change comes from short, regular practice over weeks.

I’m Gawhar Ahmad, licensed pharmacist and head coach at Being Fit. Our stretching and mobility coaching is led by Juanita, our flexibility and posture expert with a background in Pilates and stretching, and Deeksha, who specialises in rehab and injury-safe training, flexibility and mobility. Here is who it helps and what to expect.

Key takeaways

  • Stretching lengthens tight muscles; mobility work trains control of your full range.
  • Desk workers, runners, lifters, older adults and people returning from injury benefit most.
  • Short, frequent practice beats one long stretch session a week.
  • Pain is a signal to get checked, not something to stretch through.
  • Mobility work sits well alongside strength training, yoga or Pilates.

What is the difference between stretching and mobility?

Stretching is mostly passive: you hold a position to lengthen a muscle. Mobility is active: you move a joint through its range under control, using your own strength. A hamstring stretch on the floor is stretching; a controlled leg swing or a slow deep squat hold is mobility. You need both. Extra flexibility without control doesn’t help much in daily life or training.

Who benefits from a stretching and mobility coach?

  • Desk workers with stiff hips, a tight lower back or rounded shoulders. Our 10-minute posture routine for desk workers is a good start.
  • Runners, lifters and kickboxers who want better recovery and fewer niggles.
  • Older adults who want to keep moving easily. See our seniors fitness coaching for clients over 60, with their doctor’s clearance.
  • People returning to activity after an injury, working with their physiotherapist’s guidance. Our ACL rehab training guide shows how coaching and physio fit together.
  • Anyone who simply wants to move and feel better.

Why does flexibility matter?

The NHS describes flexibility as the ability of a joint to maintain the movement needed for daily tasks and physical activity, and lists stretching, yoga, tai chi and Pilates as examples of flexibility activities. Alongside strength work, it says these activities help improve balance and reduce joint pain. The World Health Organization guidelines also recommend that older adults include balance and strength activities to help prevent falls.

What happens in a one-to-one mobility session?

  1. A movement check: how your hips, spine, shoulders and ankles move, and where you compensate.
  2. Guided stretching for the areas that are holding you back.
  3. Active mobility drills to keep and control the new range.
  4. Posture correction and core work, so the improvement lasts when you sit or stand.
  5. A short routine to repeat between sessions, usually 10 minutes.

Sessions take place at home with a little floor space, in your building or community gym, at a partner gym, or online by live video.

What is a simple 10-minute mobility routine?

Move slowly, breathe steadily and stay in a comfortable range. Do each for about a minute:

  1. Cat-cow on hands and knees, to move the whole spine.
  2. Hip flexor stretch in a half-kneeling position, 30 seconds each side.
  3. 90/90 hip switches sitting on the floor, rotating your knees side to side.
  4. Thoracic rotations lying on your side, opening your top arm towards the floor behind you.
  5. Wall slides with your back against a wall, sliding your arms up and down.
  6. Deep squat hold, holding a door frame for support if you need it.
  7. Calf and ankle rocks with your foot close to a wall, knee gliding forward.

Daily is ideal; three or four times a week still helps. If any movement causes sharp pain, numbness or tingling, stop and get it checked.

Should I stretch through pain?

No. Mild tension is fine; pain is not. Persistent back, hip or shoulder pain, pain after a fall, or pain with numbness, weakness or fever needs a doctor or physiotherapist first. As a pharmacist, I’ll add: painkillers can mask the warning signs, so don’t take one in order to train through an injury.

Can I combine mobility work with strength training, yoga or Pilates?

Yes, and most clients do. A common pattern is two strength sessions plus one mobility, yoga or Pilates session a week. Our guide to Pilates, yoga and kickboxing compares the options, and our rehab and mobility page lists everything we offer. Massage at home, in one-hour sessions, is a useful extra after hard training weeks (WhatsApp for pricing).

How much does it cost?

Your first session is a free trial and assessment. Mobility can be its own focus or part of a wider plan. Packages are the same across Dubai: Essential (12 sessions a month), Signature (16), Premium (up to 20, with a trainer who comes to your home or building gym) and VIP (5 to 6 sessions a week), each with a customised nutrition plan. Pricing for every package is on our packages page, or WhatsApp for pricing on 058 572 2691. See our packages page.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer one-to-one stretching sessions in Dubai?

How often should I do mobility work?

Short daily routines work best. Three or four times a week still helps.
