Your first personal training session: what to expect

Gold clipboard, measuring tape and stopwatch arranged on a black surface

Your first personal training session at Being Fit is mostly about getting to know you. We talk through your goals, health and routine, check how you move, and then put you through a session pitched at your level, so you leave knowing what training with us feels like and what your plan would look like. You do not need to be fit to start, and nothing is done in a way that leaves you sore for a week.

I’m Gawhar Ahmad, pharmacist and head coach at Being Fit. People often tell me the hardest part was sending the first message. This guide explains exactly what happens next, so there are no surprises.

Key takeaways

  • You book by sharing your goals, preferred location and best time to train, by form, WhatsApp or email.
  • The first session can take place at your home, your building gym, a gym, a hotel or online.
  • Our assessment looks at posture, movement patterns, mobility and body composition.
  • Tell your coach about any medical conditions, injuries and medicines. As a pharmacist, I take medicines seriously.
  • After your session we recommend the package that fits your goals and schedule. There is no pressure to sign up on the day.

How do I book my first session?

Use the free trial form on our homepage or contact page, or message us on WhatsApp. We ask for your name, phone number and a short message covering three things: your goals, where you would like to train, and the best time for you. The more you tell us, the better we can match you with the right coach.

If you would prefer a female coach, just say so. We have highly qualified female coaches for clients who prefer women-only training. Our guide to choosing a female personal trainer explains more.

Where does the first session happen?

Wherever you plan to train. We arrange your first session at your home, your building or community gym, a gym, a hotel or online. Seeing your real training space helps us plan properly: what equipment is there, how much room you have, and what we need to bring. If your building gym needs management approval for an outside trainer, we help with the permission process. Read how personal training at home works if you are considering home sessions, or whether online training works if you travel a lot.

What happens during the assessment?

Step one of our process is a comprehensive assessment. It covers four areas:

AreaWhat we look atWhy it matters
PostureHow you stand and hold yourselfShows habits from desk work, old injuries or muscle imbalances
Movement patternsSquatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, steppingTells us which exercises suit you now and which to build up to
MobilityRange of motion at key joints such as hips, shoulders and anklesStiff areas can limit technique and cause aches
Body compositionMeasurements that go beyond body weightGives a baseline for tracking fat loss and muscle gain
Areas taken from the Being Fit process. Your coach chooses the specific tests to suit your goals, health and fitness level.

None of this is a test you can fail. It simply shows your starting point. Some people discover their hips are much tighter on one side, or that their squat improves as soon as their heels are supported. These details shape the plan.

What health questions will I be asked?

Expect questions about your medical history, injuries, surgeries, pain, medicines and lifestyle. This is standard good practice. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that exercise professionals consider three things before someone starts a programme: how active they are now, whether they have known heart, metabolic or kidney disease or symptoms of it, and how hard they intend to train.

As a pharmacist, I would add one more: bring a list of every medicine and supplement you take, including doses. Some medicines change how your body responds to exercise. Beta-blockers, for example, slow your heart rate, so heart-rate targets need adjusting. Insulin and some diabetes tablets can make blood sugar drop during exercise. Knowing this in advance lets your coach plan safely. If you are unsure, our guide to blood tests before training explains who should get checked first.

The NHS advises speaking to your GP before starting if you have not exercised for some time or have medical conditions or concerns. If you have chest pain, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or palpitations, see a doctor before your first session. In an emergency in the UAE, call 998.

Will we actually train?

Yes. After the conversation and assessment, your coach takes you through a session that matches your level. For a beginner, that might be learning a few basic movements with light resistance. For someone experienced, it might be a proper workout. If you have asked about Pilates, yoga, kickboxing or rehab, we can give you a taste of that too.

Your coach will keep the intensity sensible. The aim of a first session is to learn how you move and how you respond, not to exhaust you. Mild muscle soreness a day or two later is normal when you start something new. Sharp pain is not, and you should always tell your coach if something hurts.

What should I wear and bring?

  • Comfortable clothes you can move in, and trainers. For yoga or Pilates, you may prefer to train barefoot.
  • Water. In Dubai’s heat, start hydrated, especially if you train outdoors or in a warm building gym.
  • Your list of medicines and supplements, and any recent blood test results if you have them.
  • Any reports from your doctor or physiotherapist if you have an injury or are recovering from surgery.
  • A small towel, and a mat if training at home and you have one. Tell us what equipment you have, and we will plan around it.
  • Avoid a heavy meal in the hour or two before. A light snack is fine if you are hungry.

What happens after the first session?

We recommend the right package for your goals and schedule. Every package includes a customised nutrition plan with meal adjustments, progress tracking of weight, body fat and strength, and lifestyle coaching for sleep, stress and habits. Packages start at AED 3,600 a month for 12 sessions. Our guide to personal trainer costs in Dubai compares the options, and you can see them all on our packages page.

If you decide to go ahead, step two of our process is a personalised programme combining strength, mobility, conditioning and nutrition guidance, built from what we learned in your assessment. We track your progress with regular check-ins and data, and adjust as you go.

If you decide not to, that is completely fine. You will still leave with a clearer picture of your starting point.

How can I get the most from it?

  1. Be specific about your goal. “Lose 8 kg before a wedding in March” or “deadlift without back pain” is more useful than “get fit”.
  2. Be honest about your routine. If you can realistically train two mornings a week, say so. A plan you can follow beats a perfect plan you cannot.
  3. Mention what has not worked before. Past diets, injuries and programmes you quit tell us a lot.
  4. Ask questions. About the coach’s background, how progress is tracked, how sessions are rescheduled. A good coach welcomes them.
