Walk into any Dubai pharmacy and the women’s health shelf is crowded with promises. For active women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, a few supplements have reasonable research behind them, many have little, and none replace training, food and sleep. This guide offers general education on the most discussed options. It is not a prescription: please decide with your doctor or our nutritionist, especially if you take medication. For a broader pharmacist’s view, see our guide to which supplements are worth it.
Food first
Supplements fill gaps; they do not build the house. A plan with enough protein, colourful plants, whole grains, healthy fats and enough fluid in Dubai’s heat does most of the work. Our nutritionist starts there.
Protein powder
Protein needs often rise with strength training and age. A powder is simply convenient food, useful when meals are rushed. Choose third-party tested products, and check with your doctor if you have kidney disease.
Vitamin D
Despite the sunshine, low vitamin D is common in the UAE because people spend so much time indoors and covered. A blood test tells you whether you need it; your doctor sets the dose.
Calcium
Important for bone health, ideally from food such as dairy, fortified alternatives, tinned fish with bones and leafy greens. Supplements may be advised if your diet falls short; ask your doctor.
Omega-3
Commonly discussed for heart and general health, especially if you rarely eat oily fish. It can interact with blood thinners, so check first.
Magnesium
Often discussed for sleep and muscle function. Evidence is mixed, and forms differ. Ask your doctor or our nutritionist.
Creatine
One of the most researched sports supplements, with growing interest in women for muscle and possibly bone and brain health. Confirm with your doctor if you have kidney concerns.
What to be wary of
Be cautious of products claiming to balance hormones, burn fat or replace medical treatment, and of multi-ingredient blends with undisclosed amounts. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Women going through menopause can find more support through our menopause coaching.
A sample coached week
Every plan is individual, but a realistic starting week for a busy woman or professional in Dubai might look like this: two or three coached sessions of around an hour, mixing strength, conditioning and mobility; a brisk walk of 30 to 45 minutes on most other days, indoors or at cooler times in summer; one longer, gentler session such as yoga, Pilates or a stretch-focused recovery hour; and a simple daily target for protein, fibre, water and sleep. Your coach reviews how you feel each week and adjusts load, volume and recovery rather than chasing a fixed schedule.
When to pause and speak to your doctor
Stop exercising and seek medical advice if you notice chest pain or pressure, unusual breathlessness, dizziness or fainting, palpitations, sudden severe headache, new or unusual bleeding, or pain that does not settle. Tell your coach about any change in medication, new diagnosis or test result, so the plan can be adjusted. Good coaching means knowing when not to push.
How Being Fit supports you
We work alongside your doctor, not instead of them. A typical plan has four parts:
- Training – one-to-one sessions at home, in your building gym or online, with a female coach on request. Intensity is set around your medical clearance and how you feel each week.
- Nutrition plan – built with the nutritionist on our team, around your culture, schedule, restaurant meals and any guidance from your doctor.
- Supplement education – general, evidence-based information only, with personalised decisions left to your doctor or our nutritionist. We do not sell or prescribe supplements.
- Lifestyle change – sleep, stress, daily steps, alcohol and recovery, including massage, yoga or Pilates at home if useful.
